England Squeaks by Australia 12-11 in Electrifying Finish |
July 5, 2008 |

COQUITLAM, B.C. - Sam Russell scored his third goal of the game for England with just 22 seconds remaining to beat
the Australians 12-11 Saturday in their 2008 ILF U-19 Men's Lacrosse World Championships round robin matchup at
Percy Perry Stadium.
As time expired the England team erupted into celebration and rushed the stands where their fans had cheered back
and forth with the Australian fans attending the game.
England led the game 4-0 after the first period of play as the English controlled the game for almost the entire
first period. Australia stormed back in the second period with five goals, four of which were on the powerplay, to
make it a very tight 6-5 game at the half.
The Aussies continued their comeback and tied the game early in the third and eventually took their first lead of
the game when Kade Robinson scored to make it 8-7 for the Aussies. Matt Diver scored with one minute remaining in
the third to make it a two goal cushion heading into the fourth.
England tied the game 9-9 by scoring the first two goals of the period. Will Pickett scored for Australia to put
them up by one once again, only to have England's Greg Rowlinson score his third of game to tie it again. England
took the lead at the 11 minute mark when Max Sandy scored and Pickett scored his third goal of the game five minutes later to tie it again.
The game looked as if it could be the first game to reach overtime in the tournament but Sam Russell beat Australian
goalie Samual Kilford, who played a very strong game, for the game-winning goal.
England (2-1) will take on Iroquois Nationals (1-2) on Sunday at 7:15 p.m. while Australia (0-3) will try to get on
track when they play Japan (0-3) earlier in the day at 9:30 a.m. at Percy Perry Stadium.
