No Dowd About It, Team USA Still Perfect after 16-15 OT Win over Canada |
July 6, 2008 |
|
COQUITLAM, B.C. - Team USA stormed back after trailing by seven goals in the fourth period to remain undefeated
after 33 games in tournament history with 16-15 overtime victory Over Canada on July 6 at Percy Perry Stadium.
Craig Dowd (Georgetown University) scored five goals in the fourth period including the game-tying goal with only 26
seconds remaining to send the round robin game between the two power houses into overtime. It was the first time
USA had ever been pushed to overtime in tournament history.
At the beginning of the fourth period, it seemed as if the Americans would suffer their first loss ever after Canada
had outscored them 9-3 in the third period. Canada seemed to let up though and allowed the US team to get back in
the game. Canada goalie Remington Steele faced 13 shots by the Americans in the fourth period and played very well
despite allowing eight goals in the period. The majority of the goals were high percentage shots in tight that
Steele didn't have much of a chance at stopping.
James Green (Ohio State University) of USA opened the scoring at the 1:25 mark of the first period by beating Canada
goalie Remington Steele (Robert Morris University). Robbie Campbell (UBC) replied for Team Canada 13 minutes later
to tie the game after a very defensive battle and great goaltending by Steele and American goalie Adam Ghitelman
(University of Virginia). Canada took the lead two minutes later when Adam Jones (Owen Sound, Ont.) beat Ghitelman
all alone in front of the net. Jack McBride (Princeton University) tied it just before the end of the period.
Brock Sorensen (Peterborough Ont.) put Canada ahead while down a man 1:23 into the second only to have McBride tie
it again for USA at the 5:26 mark. Kyle Clancy (Peterborough, Ont.) put Canada ahead once again and McBride scored
his third goal of the game to tie it for the third time in a row for the Americans. Adrian Sorichetti (Whitby, Ont.)
scored on an open net when Ghitelman came out of his net trying to anticipate a pass to put Canada ahead 5-4 at half
time.
Canada's Jayson Card (Caledon, Ont.) scored three goals in the third period in the losing effort and leads Canada
with 15 goals after four round robin games. Mark Cockerton (Oshawa, Ont.) had two goals in the game and has 10 goals
for Canada. Dowd leads USA with 15 goals, followed by Andrew Feinberg (Brown University) and McBride with 11 and 10
goals respectively.
Canada (3-1) will take on Japan (0-4) in their final round robin game on Monday, July 7 at 7:15 p.m. and USA (4-0)
will play England (2-1) earlier Monday afternoon at 12:45. Both games will be played at Percy Perry Stadium in
Coquitlam. Playoffs and Play-In games begin on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. The top two teams in the Blue Division will get
a bye and will play their first playoff game on Thursday, July 10 at either 4 p.m. or 7:15 p.m.
