USA puts 34 game winning streak on the line in semi-final game against England
July 9, 2008
COQUITLAM, B.C. - Team USA will play in the Semi-Finals at the 2008 ILF U-19 Men's Lacrosse World Championships against England July 10 at 4:00 p.m. at Coquitlam's Percy Perry Stadium.

Team USA finished in first place in the Blue Division with a 5-0 record, narrowly beating Team Canada by a score of 16-15 in overtime on July 6 in front of a crowd of appoximately 2100. They also beat Iroquois, who finished in thrid place in the Blue Division, by a score of 20-15, a game in which the Iroquois were very much a part of.

The semi-final game between England the U.S. will be the second time the two teams will meet this tournament. The first time they met was July 7, a game in which the Americans won 24-4.

USA is led by attackers Craig Dowd (Georgetown University) with 17 goals and six assists, Brown University's Andrew Feinberg (15 goals, two assists), Malvern Prep School's Matthew MacKrides (14 goals, one assist), and Princeton University's Jack McBride (12 goals, two assists). Midfielder Matthew Dolente (Johns Hopkins University) has won 81 of his 127 opportunities in the faceoff circle.

England is led by midfielder Sam Russell with 17 goals and two assists, attackers Greg Rowlinson (13 goals, two assists), Daniel Ives (12 goals, one assist), and the player that has his own song that resembles the Batman theme song, Zac Guy (nine goals, two assists).

The England fans at the tournament have several chants throughout each game for many different players, and if the game itself has not been entertaining, listening to the fans chant time and time again has been. In a game against Australia during the round-robin, the England fans chanted back and forth throughout the entire game with the Aussie fans. That game turned out to be an exciting matchup on and off the field as England won the game 12-11.

England goaltenders Daniel Grime and Anthony Hayes have split time the entire tournament and fans should expect the same in this game. USA goalies Adam Ghitelman (University of Virgina) and Tyler Fiorito (McDonogh School) have split time as well during the round-robin. Ghitelman played the entire game against Canada on July 6 and Fiorito played the entire game against England the next day. USA head coach Chuck Apel says Ghitelman will get the start.

Apel says, "we plan to keep doing what we have been doing, maybe take smarter shots." There really is no need to change their gameplan against England since they easily beat them the first time around. He said that the coaches know better than to look past an opponent and they take every game seriously and he hopes the players know better as well. Apel was an assistant coach with the U-19 team in 1999 and this is the first time he has been the head coach of USA. He has been coaching for 30 years though and he takes one lacrosse game at a time, whether its in a tournament, league, or a world championships.

Team USA practiced Wednesday afternoon for about an hour and a half to prepare for the semi-final against England but the team was given the day off on Tuesday. "A lot of the guys went up to Whistler, some guys spent the day with their family," said Apel. "British Columbia is beautiful, a lot of people up here take it for granted," he added.

The winner of this semi-final matchup will take on the winner of the Canada - Iroquois Nationals semi-final game being played July 10, at 7:15 p.m. at the main stadium field at Percy Perry Stadium. Fans can purchase passes at the front gate for the entire day which will feature four games, including the two semi-final matchups, for as little as $20.

The losers of the semi-final games will play in the bronze medal game on July 12 at 11:00 a.m. and the tournament will conclude with the gold medal game 2:30 p.m. followed by an awards ceremony directly afterwards.
